Stress

Stress is an ever-growing problem in the Netherlands. We all face it at some point or other, often through no fault of our own. Traffic congestion is getting worse. The cost of public transport is going up while the service is deteriorating. The economy is doing well and there is greater demand for production. But companies are after ever bigger profits, so they reorganise, and the general uncertainty and pressure at work increase. We are constantly hearing about potential terror threats or the threat of an outbreak of some serious unmanageable disease, such as bird flu. Illnesses are also often accompanied by stress – will I get well and get rid of my symptoms? Each and every one of these facts of life is a source of stress.

When the body is stressed, it responds to the tension by changing its breathing pattern. The muscles generally constrict and breathing is no longer relaxed. This can actually lead to some 200 physiological and psychological symptoms.

- The 50 most common symptoms can be found on the list of symptoms.

The symptoms generally manifest themselves just when you think you are doing better because you’ve arrived at a point where the stress is slowly subsiding. We know from experience that if you can control your breathing, then you can regulate the stress, thereby preventing or alleviating symptoms.
